Access to the French Way through El Bierzo, with a connection to the Forgotten Way and a natural environment full of mountains and vineyards.

Transition Villages (Valle del Valcarce)

• 5️⃣ Pereje (5.2 km): Village surrounded by chestnut trees. Municipal Hostel (10-12€).

• 6️⃣ Trabadelo (4.5 km): Dense groves of chestnut trees. Parochial Hostel (10-12€).

• 7️⃣ La Portela de Valcarce (4 km): Church of San Juan Bautista and old blacksmith's shop. Hotel Valcarce (45-65€).

8️⃣ Ambasmestas (The Hidden Gem) - 1.2 km away

It stands out for the confluence of the Balboa and Valcarce rivers and its traditional architecture.

⭐ Special Recommendations:

• 🍺 Bar A Rodeira Vaiche Boa: Essential! Beer, wine, quality tapas, energising breakfasts, and a family atmosphere. ("Vaiche Boa" = you will like it).

• 🏡 Rural House Casa Contadora: Old stone house (19th century) renovated. Private garden, river beach area, ideal for relaxing before the ascent. (Bunk bed 15€ / Private room 40-50€).

9️⃣ Vega de Valcarce (Last Village with Services) - 1.6 km away

Strategic population with shops, pharmacy, ATMs, and bakery.

• 🏛️ Visits: Sarracín Castle and the Church of Magdalena.

• 🏨 Albergue El Paso (12-15€): Family-run, clean, with kitchen and bike storage.

• 🍺 Bar El Ambiente: D.O. Bierzo wines, cold beers, and homemade tapas.

🔟 Ruitelán (2.1 km) and 1️⃣1️⃣ Las Herrerías (1.5 km)

In Ruitelán, visit the Chapel of San Froilán. In Las Herrerías (former English hospital), we highly recommend the 🏡 Rural House La Pandela: rooms with bathroom (45-60€) and excellent pilgrim menu (12-15€). It is the perfect place to rest before the tough stretch.

1️⃣2️⃣ La Faba (2.5 km) and 1️⃣3️⃣ Laguna de Castilla (2.4 km)

⚠️ Attention: In La Faba begins the most demanding stretch. Laguna de Castilla is the last village in León (Milestone 152.5). Say goodbye to León and prepare for Galicia.

1️⃣4️⃣ 🎉 O Cebreiro (Finish in Galicia) - 1.5 km away

You did it! Welcome to Lugo.

• 🏛️ Must-sees: ⭐ Church of Santa María la Real (9th century), ⭐ The 4 Pallozas (Celtic architecture), ⭐ Tesón da Cruz (panoramic views), and the Miracle of O Cebreiro.

• 🍽️ Where to eat: Mesón Antón, Casa Carolo, Venta Celta, Esther's Restaurant.

• 🏨 Where to sleep: Pilgrims' Hostel of the Xunta (18€), Hospedería San Giraldo, Casa Rural Venta Celta.

⚠️ Service Notice in O Cebreiro: NO banks, only 1 cash machine, pharmacy or bike workshop. You must go to Pedrafita do Cebreiro (3 km away) for these services.

⚠️ The Ascent to O Cebreiro: Survival Guide

Note: In the first 21 km you only ascend 190m, but in the last 7.5 km you climb 610m.

Tips for the ascent:

• Preparation: Have a hearty breakfast, carry 2L of water and use trekking poles (they reduce impact by 30%).

• Walking technique: Take short and steady steps. Inhale through your nose (2-3s) and exhale through your mouth (3-4s).

• Breaks: Take 2-3 minute breaks every half hour, but do not sit down to avoid cooling your body.

• Weather: If it rains, the ground is very slippery. If you go in summer, leave at 6:00 AM to avoid the heat. In winter, extreme caution with ice (light crampons are a good idea).

• 🚴 For cyclists: It is MANDATORY to go on the paved road. Use very low gears (34/32).

🍷 Gastronomy of Bierzo: What you MUST try

• 🍖 Botillo from Bierzo: Star dish. Cured sausage cooked with potatoes and chorizo. (Order it in advance, 15-20€).

• 🐙 Pulpo a la gallega: Classic upon arriving in O Cebreiro (12-16€).

• 🧀 Queso do Cebreiro: Fresh cheese shaped like a priest's hat. Incredible with honey.

• 🍷 D.O. Bierzo wines: Red wines of Mencía (fruity) and whites of Godello (fresh).

💡 The Pilgrim's Menu (12-15€): Usually includes garlic soup/stew as a starter, grilled meats/hake as a main, dessert and D.O. wine.

• Cash: 20-30€/day (many rural places do not accept cards).

• Hiking poles and Water bottle/Camelbak (2L).

• Medical Services: Bierzo Hospital (Ponferrada), Health Centre (Villafranca). There is none in O Cebreiro, you must go to Pedrafita (3 km).

• Backpack Transport (5-7€/stage): Jacotrans, Correos Express, Pilbeo.

✅ Summary and Final Tips

• Book in advance: Public hostels do NOT take reservations (arrive early), but private ones DO (highly recommended in summer).

• The Credential: Stamp at least 2 times a day in the last 100 km to obtain your Compostela.

• The Galician Weather: The raincoat/waterproof is always mandatory.

• Enjoy: It is not a race. The climb hurts, but the reward of seeing the pallozas of O Cebreiro is priceless. Greet, respect the environment and live the experience!
